Our aerial capabilities
Drone Search & Rescue Support in East Tennessee
Aerial and thermal search support for organized teams, providing overhead perspective and useful location information across difficult East Tennessee terrain.
Aerial and thermal support for search teams
Volunteer Aerial Technologies provides drone search and rescue support for organized searches across East Tennessee. Aerial cameras can help teams scan large areas, difficult terrain and locations that would take significantly more time to cover from the ground alone.
Our role is to support the people responsible for the search with useful aerial information. Depending on the mission and conditions, that can include visible-light imagery, thermal imagery, location observations and live aerial perspective.
How a drone can support a search
- Quickly scan fields, wooded edges, ridges and other large areas.
- Use thermal imaging to investigate heat signatures when conditions allow.
- Provide an overhead view of terrain, access routes and areas of interest.
- Help search coordinators direct ground resources toward useful locations.
- Document aerial findings for follow-up.
Thermal imaging has limits
Thermal cameras detect differences in surface temperature; they do not see through solid objects or dense cover. Vegetation, canopy, weather, terrain and background temperature can all affect what is visible. We use thermal as one tool alongside visible imagery and information from the search team.
Coordination matters
For active emergency or organized search operations, VAT works in a support role and coordinates with the responsible agency, incident command or authorized search leadership. A private drone operator is not a replacement for calling 911 or contacting the appropriate emergency authority when someone is in immediate danger.
East Tennessee coverage
VAT is based in Madisonville and can support projects and organized searches throughout East Tennessee depending on location, airspace, weather and availability. Contact us with the situation, search area and coordinating organization.
COMMON QUESTIONS
What to know before a mission.
Is VAT a replacement for 911 or emergency responders?
No. If someone is in immediate danger, contact 911 or the appropriate emergency authority. VAT provides aerial support for organized searches and works alongside the people responsible for the operation.
How does VAT coordinate during an organized search?
For active emergency or organized search operations, VAT coordinates with the responsible agency, incident command or authorized search leadership. Our role is to provide useful aerial perspective and information that supports the larger search effort.
What can thermal imaging do during a search?
Thermal imaging can help investigate heat signatures when conditions provide enough temperature contrast. It cannot see through solid cover, and canopy, terrain, weather and background temperature can all affect visibility.
