Our aerial capabilities
Drone Deer Recovery in East Tennessee
Thermal-assisted aerial searches for hunters across East Tennessee, with a careful approach to difficult terrain, property access and useful location information.
Thermal-assisted deer recovery for East Tennessee hunters
Volunteer Aerial Technologies provides drone-assisted deer recovery from Madisonville for hunters across East Tennessee. A thermal-equipped aircraft can help scan fields, woods, ridges and other difficult terrain from above, reducing the amount of ground that has to be searched on foot.
A drone search is most useful when we start with good information. Before a mission, be ready to share the last known location, shot location, direction of travel, tracking signs you observed and the property areas where we have permission to operate or recover.
How an aerial search helps
- Cover large areas and difficult terrain efficiently.
- Use thermal and visible-light cameras together to investigate likely locations.
- Document useful locations and findings that can guide the next step on the ground.
- Reduce unnecessary walking through steep, thick or hard-to-access areas.
What affects a thermal search
Thermal imaging is a powerful tool, but it is not a guarantee. Air temperature, vegetation, canopy cover, terrain, time since the shot and the animal's location can all affect what the camera can see. We use thermal imagery as one part of the search and combine it with the details you provide.

COMMON QUESTIONS
What to know before a mission.
When should I contact VAT after a shot?
Contact us as soon as practical. Be ready to share the shot location, last known location, direction of travel, tracking signs you observed and property-access information. Those details help us determine whether an aerial search is appropriate and how to plan it.
Can a thermal drone see through trees?
No. Thermal cameras detect surface temperature differences; they do not see through trees, solid cover or dense canopy. Leaves, terrain, weather and background temperature can all affect visibility.
Does a drone search guarantee recovery?
No. A drone can cover ground efficiently and investigate likely areas, but vegetation, terrain, temperature and the animal's location can prevent detection. Thermal imagery is one tool used as part of the search.
